Nolina hibernica

First brought in from Mexico.
This very hardy, hardy species grows to high altitudes in the mountains of Tamaulipas, north-east Mexico, up to 2,500 metres above sea level. The plant has grass-green leaves with a very sharp edge. The plants occur in the same biotope as Agave montana. Stem 40-60 cm.
Natural sites occasionally suffer from grass burns and the stem with dead leaves will therefore sometimes burn away, giving the trunk a black appearance, as is the case with Xanthoerea ssp from Australia, where they are called black boys. The plants are not affected, and the new leaves then cover the trunk again.
